  19. This program (Advanced ARJ Password Recovery, or simply AAPR)
  20. can be used to recover the lost passwords for a ARJ and WinArj
  21. archives. At the moment, there is no known method to extract
  22. the password from the compressed file, so the only available
  23. methods are "brute force", dictionary-based and known-plaintext
  24. attacks.

  26. Well, there are a lot of programs like this around, but
  27. all of them have their own "pros" and "cons". Here is a brief
  28. list of AAPR's advantages:
  29.  
  30. - The program has a convenient user interface
  31. - The program is very fast: about two million passwords per
  32.   second (on Pentium II)
  33. - Self-extracting archives are supported
  34. - The program is customizable: you can set the password length
  35.   (or length range), the character set to be used to generate
  36.   the passwords, and a couple of other options
  37. - You can select the custom character set for brute-force attack
  38.   (non-English characters are supported)
  39. - Dictionary-based attack is available
  40. - The "brute-force with mask" attack is available
  41. - The maximum password length is not limited (in registered
  42.   version)
  43. - Very fast known-plaintext attack is available
  44. - No special virtual memory requirements
  45. - You can interrupt the program at any time, and start from the
  46.   same point later
  47. - The program can work in the background, using the CPU only 
  48.   when it is in idle state
  49.  
  50. The next versions will have much more useful features, of
  51. course.

  57. - Windows 95 (any version), Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 or
  58.   Windows 2000 running on Pentium CPU
  59. - 4 megabytes of RAM
  60. - about 1 megabyte of hard disk space

  63. Known bugs and limitations
  64. --------------------------

  66. - The program might not work with archives created with ARJ
  67.   newer than version 2.60.
  68. - When files in archive are "stored" (ARJ method 0) or packed
  69.   with method 4, the performance might be lower than expected,
  70.   because unpacking the whole file is required.
